Lethbridge artist Maria Madacky likes to create spaces for her art. She opens her new exhibit “ White Labyrinth” at CASA Sept. 6.Local artist Maria Madacky helps Darcy Logan install the lights for White Labyrinth. Photo by Richard Amery
“It’s inspired by a Greek myth from Crete of the Minotaur,” she said, but instead of being dark, dank, and scary,  she created a labyrinth of her own by weaving pieces of old curtains which has a more optimistic, hopeful feel.

“ I wove all of the panels out of recycled curtains on a loom,” she said adding that isn’t as important as the effect her exhibit has on the individual viewer.

“Labyrinths can be a window inside yourself and into another dimension,” she said.

It leads to a different kind of consciousness,” she said adding while the Greek  myth represents a labyrinth as a place that is dark and scary, modern labyrinths are a place for the individual to meditate, relax and look within themselves and clear their minds of worries.

She couldn’t  say when  she decided on the concept, but has been physically working on it for two years.
“ I’m excited to see its effect on people,” she said.
This is her first solo exhibit at CASA though she had a couple at the Bowman and has participated in local group exhibitions
White Labyrinth runs at CASA  Sept. 6-Oct. 25. The opening reception is  Sept. 6 at 7 p.m.
