A highlight of ArtsDays this week was the second annual Cabaret at CASA, Sept. 25, which, at around 25 people, attracted a few more people than last year’s event.
That was impressive as it was competing with big events like Godsmack, Seether and Pop Evil at the Enmax Centre and the opening of the University of Lethbridge's first Theatre Xtra production of the season.
The variety show featured stand up comedians Conner Christmas and Brett Hutchinson and musical performances by Rayne -Anne Latchford, who performed a short set of acoustic country music and quirky musical duo Alisha Van Wieren and Becca McDonald, cracking each other up as well as the audience with original, whimsical folk songs.
The highlight was mentalist Jeff Newman who performed a short set of jaw dropping mentalism with the help of a few good natured audience members.
In between acts, the evening's hosts Drama Nutz members David Gabert, David Adie and Hannah Rud entertained the audience with improv games Sound effect, which has the audience performing “church sounds” — enlightenment and pipe organ.
They also performed a word at a time story based on the word flame, their beloved game “Ding” taking place between a dentist and patient for which the performer had to change their answer every time the host said “ding.”
They brought audience members on stage for “Mad Libs” to provide random words the performers had to use.
They also performed alphabet scene and wound up with Beastie Boys— a rap based on the word “inconceivable” which of course ended up being about the movie the Princess Bride.
