Durban Poison and Fist City highlights of Saturday night at Electric Eye

E-mail Print PDF

The Electric Eye Music Festival had a huge day on Saturday, May 14, put due to other commitments, I only caught a few of the Durban Poison playing Attainable Records for Electric Eye, May 14. Photo by Richard Ameryshows. Fortunately they were the ones I really wanted to see.

I caught the last couple songs from Lethbridge/ Calgary based garage rock/ punk band Fist City. It’s been a while since I last saw them — probably last year’s Electric Eye. I forgot how good  they are. As it was purportedly their last show, they went out with a bang and had a lot of people excited to be part of the audience at the Slice.
They played a tight and frenetic set which has  a few people attempting to crowd surf.

I left a little early because I didn’t want to miss the Shake Records showcase, featuring Victoria/ Vancouver punk band Durban Poison at Attainable Records, which also had Terra and the Ruby Plumes playing around suppertime.

I should have stayed at  the Slice, as the Durban Poison started their short, sweet loud and exuberant set a little late, possibly waiting for people to trickle over from the Slice.

A few of them eventually did anFist City playing the Slice, May 14 for Electric Eye. Photo by Richard Ameryd were suitable impressed by their tight, quick bursts of energy and perhaps taken aback by the band’s volume which drowned out Maddy Corvette’s vocals. As seemed to be common throughout the Electric Eye, the band was accompanied by a psychedelic light show.

After they ended their set, Attainable Records was packed to capacity with a few people being turned away at the door, as  Blü Shorts took their time setting up.

The Calgary band featured Martine Menard, former CKXU’s music director and who played the Electric Eye  with her band Hag Face.

Blü Shorts reminded me a lot of Hag Face, with a spooky vibe, female powered vocals, waves of feedback drenched guitar and layers of trippy guitar and bass noise.

I wandered back to the Slice for their last band of the night, the Freak Heat Waves. Most of the audience form Fist City seemed to have stayed for the Victoria band’s laid back brand of psychedelic rock featuring layers of guitar and echo dominated vocals.
They had a throbbing bass and a steady beat with just a touch of bluesy jam rock.Blü SHorts playing Attainable Records, may 14 for The Electric Eye. photo by Richard Amery
